      <image:title>Blog - Do I paint? Do I stain? - Tuscan Style Nightstand</image:title>
      <image:caption>This Tuscan style nightstand is much newer than the dresser but I only had one, so I decided to make them a pair by following the same design. Again, this piece was in excellent shape; it just needed a little work on one foot and the drawer slides. I do have a video posted on my YouTube channel showing that process. Link here: Replacing Drawer Slides and Stoppers,</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Do I paint? Do I stain? - Spanish Revival Style Dresser</image:title>
      <image:caption>This Spanish Revival style dresser was in pretty good shape when I bought it. However, if you look closely, you can see where the veneer on the drawers is damaged. This is the main reason I decided to paint around the edges of the drawers. I didn’t want to cover up the beautiful grain of wood in the center of the drawers, so I wanted to leave those stained.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Do I paint? Do I stain? - Painting the trim</image:title>
      <image:caption>As I said above, the trim on these drawers was damaged and so that left me no choice but to paint this section. This was easy to do with the carved out sections already there. You can see the beautiful grain of these drawers in this picture and I definitely wanted to showcase it. Down below you will see how beautiful it ended up being after I applied Watco Danish oil.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Do I paint? Do I stain? - If you’ve got it, FLAUNT IT!</image:title>
      <image:caption>Wow! Look at that amazing woodgrain! To get this look, I sanded through the old finish using 120 grit, 180 and then 220 until it was smooth as butter. I didn’t want to cover up any of the natural wood so instead of a stain, I used Watco Danish oil in natural just to enhance the grain. What do you think? I love it! I only used Watco Danish oil on the drawers. I did not use it on any other parts of the wood. I used a stain on the remaining wood on this dresser and then I applied a topcoat on that and the painted areas. *Remember, don’t mix water based and oil based products without doing your homework first.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Do I paint? Do I stain? - Painting the Top!</image:title>
      <image:caption>The top of this dresser had some flaws so I painted it as well, but it is almost a dry brush method so the wood shows through just a bit. To do this, apply paint and then use a spray bottle of water to spray the surface and keep brushing until you reveal some of the wood. You could also use a rag and wipe it back. Try both and see which method gives the look you want.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>These are two little drawers at the top of the dresser. I wanted the raised carvings to be wood but the recessed areas to be black. So I painted the entire surface - hard to just paint the recessed areas - and then I wiped the paint off.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Blending Paints on Carvings - Spanish Credenza - Almost there…..</image:title>
      <image:caption>I finally painted the remaining part of the door! If you notice, I have added more turquoise to the inside of the door as well as the outside trim. I blended the indigo blue, the turquoise and added Republic Red at the top to create a gradient effect on the door.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Blending Paints on Carvings - Spanish Credenza - Which Step is this?</image:title>
      <image:caption>I didn’t really like the yellow that I added in the step above so as you can see, I got rid of it. Here I started to really make the red and turquoise pop. Basically, when you make a decision to blend paints, you just keep adding and blending until you have the look you want. Have you noticed that I haven’t painted the outside trim of the doors? That’s because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do so I left that part until I had the carvings the way I wanted them to look.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>These doors were definitely a work-in-progress! I didn’t really have an exact plan but I was having trouble getting them to look the way I was envisioning. At this point, I began adding brighter colors to details such as the petals in the middle of the door. If you look closely, you can see that I added 4 different colors as I worked around the center flower. I also began adding some yellow, turquoise, and red to the swirls and petals .</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - French Provincial Writing Desk - Made of solid Cherry, this desk was in perfect condition…..well almost. In the picture at right, you can see one of the handles was falling off. That is all that is wrong with this desk.</image:title>
      <image:caption>As I do with most of my pieces, I wanted to leave the top stained. Why, you ask? I feel that a stained top stands up to wear and tear better than paint and I also love showing off a beautiful grain. Therefore, if a piece of furniture has a top that is in good condition, I typically sand it and stain it. Of course, there are times when I do paint the top, so I just put on a good top coat, and it will be fine. As always, I cleaned this piece thoroughly with Krud Kutter, vacuumed it all over, sanded the top completely and did a scuff sand on the rest of it to prepare for paint.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - French Provincial Writing Desk - I don’t have very many progress pictures of this desk. I think I was just trying to get it finished quickly and so I got carried away with just working. I used Wise Owl Chalk paint in Black and painted two coats and then applied Wise Owl Wax in clear.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I replaced the hardware with these gold knobs and added Gilding Wax in gold to some of the curves and details to tie it all together.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - French Provincial Writing Desk - As a final touch, I always do something with the inside of the drawers. I love using Wise Owl’s Hemp Salve in different scents on the inside of drawers. It renews the wood and makes it smell wonderful. However, with this piece, I decided to use wrapping paper to line the drawers. I used decoupage paste to attach the paper. I thought about leaving it loose so that it would be easy to change but it just wouldn’t lay down and be still. It would be possible to lay down another layer of paper down the road, if necessary.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I look for different types of paper on sale and I just collect for use later on. I measured the drawers and cut the paper to size. I brushed on a layer of decoupage paste and gently laid down the paper. I then applied another layer of paste and let it dry. If it feels a little rough after drying, sand it with a 220 grit or higher sand paper, clean it off and apply another layer of the paste. I usually do several layers when I decoupage.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - French Provincial Dresser and matching Night Stands - As you can see, the stripping gel definitely took off most of the paint but not all. This picture is after cleaning off the gel and then sanding but I still had a long way to go. It took a LOT of sanding to get to a clean finish that could be stained. But I did it! I persevered! Of course it would have been a lot easier if I could have just painted the top but my friend wanted a stained top. Anything for friends, right?</image:title>
      <image:caption>It was worth it though. Look at the final pictures at the bottom and I think you will agree.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - French Provincial Dresser and matching Night Stands - Please excuse this bad picture. Sometimes I just forget to take before pictures. This one is from the auction site where I purchased the dresser. I’m sure now that you have seen it, you are familiar with this style. The top is solid wood but has a thin wood veneer on top. I tried sanding but I could tell that the finish on the top was going to be really difficult to get off, so I decided to strip. I’ve watched videos on stripping furniture but I don’t have a lot of experience doing it myself.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I applied Citristrip stripping gel and covered it with saran wrap and let it set for several hours. Keeping it wet is very important!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - French Provincial Dresser and matching Night Stands - Once I had the top sanded, I covered it and taped it up to protect it while I painted the rest. I took off the hardware (that is a whole other story), and did a scuff sand all over. I used my Wagner Flexio paint sprayer and applied a layer of primer and then 2 coats of Wise Owl One Hour Enamel paint in Antique Villa. This was my first time using One Hour Enamel paint and I love it! It goes on smooth, has a tough finish and no need for a top coat! I did sand between coats with a 220 grit sand paper (or higher) to get a really smooth finish.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - Creating a Rusty Patina! - I had so much fun refinishing another dresser in this same style, that I decided to try it again. And again, I began with an inspiration but it soon migrated into its own original look</image:title>
      <image:caption>This piece was in great shape and solid wood. All I had to do was clean it really good and do a scuff sand to prepare for painting. I completely sanded the top so that it could be stained and then I taped it off to protect it during the painting process.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Creating a Rusty Patina! - My inspiration piece used the patina combinations to create the blue in the final piece. However, I did not get the look that I wanted by doing that so I used paint. I painted the bottom of the dresser (over the brown) with the Dixie Belle Patina paint in Bronze. This line of paints is beautiful on its own. You do not have to activate it with the spray and here I used it just as a paint alone. I then painted the center part of the side panel with Wise Owl Refurbished Gentleman and began to blend it with Isle Avenue at the top. Here you can see the first coats going on and you can definitely see that I will need another coat. However, I am starting to see the beginnings of my vision.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - Creating a Rusty Patina! - My vision was to create a gradient of colors beginning with a creamy white at the top, into blues and then browns at the bottom. I began by painting just a solid brown on the bottom half and the creamy white at the top, as you can see in the picture. I also knew that I wanted the final look to be rustic and weathered so my plan was to use the Dixie Belle patina paints to create that look.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I soon figured out that I didn’t really need the brown paint at the bottom but oh well.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Creating a Rusty Patina! - This picture shows where I added the Iron patina paint at the bottom and then activated it with the Green spray. This is a great way of creating a old rusty finish. In this picture, I have not added any blue to the front. In the picture below I have added blue and blended the paints. At the bottom you can really see the rust that I have created using the Iron paint and the green activator spray.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - 1970s Thomasville Buffet - After the mold dried, it was time to fill it in. I used Bondo wood filler and I will provide you with the link. This stuff is amazing and fairly easy to use. Don’t be afraid! If I can do it, so can you. Because I didn’t have a perfect foot to create my mold, I had a lot of sanding to do after my “new” foot dried. It was way too big so I just sanded on it until I got it down to the right size. I wish I had pictures of this process but I will definitely take them next time. Even though my foot was too large, it did have the correct curve that I needed. All I had to do was sand it down until it was the right size.</image:title>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/61a8ff6e6eb9fd7cde4adc32/7d5d923b-14e6-4e1a-8718-299eff2eb30d/1970s+buffet+2.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blog - 1970s Thomasville Buffet - This is one of the original images that was in the auction and it really shows the way the feet curve. In order to get a mold of the foot with the curves going the right direction, I had to use a portion of the front right foot on this buffet. You can’t really see it that well here but that is what I did. And it worked!</image:title>
      <image:caption>So how did I do it? If you Search how to create a mold on YouTube, you will see that there are many methods. The method I used involved using a hot glue gun to create the mold. Go watch a video and you will see what I did. First I sprayed my foot …..haha, not my foot….the buffet foot with PAM so that the mold would come off easier. Then I just completely wrapped the area that I was going to use to create my new foot and let it dry. After it dried, I peeled it off of the foot and examined it for holes. I filled in any that I saw.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>

      <image:title>Blog - 1970s Thomasville Buffet - I found a picture of the rebuilt foot! Hallelujah! Doesn’t it feel good when you find something that you didn’t think you had?</image:title>
      <image:caption>So look at the back foot in this picture. That entire piece was missing when I bought this buffet. If you look closely, you can see that it is not the same as the front foot. What a dilemma! How was I going to create a foot that I didn’t have? Use the other back foot you say! No, that won’t work because it faces the opposite direction. The process of rebuilding this foot is to create a mold of another foot just like it. However, even though the other back foot is the same, it curves the opposite direction.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Using a Paint Sprayer for the first time</image:title>
      <image:caption>As you can see, our process was not as professional as the finish. We used the garage and laid down sheets on the floor; not ideal but it worked! We laid out all of the doors and I primed one side and let them dry. The biggest challenge of this project was time because I had only 4 days. The drying time between coats is necessary and could not be rushed so we started every morning and worked until dark every day. I did sand between coats with a 220 grit sand paper. This made the finish as smooth as a baby’s bottom….lol. While we waited for the doors to dry, we painted on the cabinet boxes inside.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Using a Paint Sprayer for the first time - Priming</image:title>
      <image:caption>I am starting the story with Priming, however, before this could happen, a lot of work took place. My daughter had to take off the doors and remove the hinges. These doors did not have hardware so that saved a step. She had to clean all of the doors and the boxes before we could prime. So So So IMPORTANT! Especially on kitchen cabinets that had collected grease and grime over many years. Once they were clean, we did a light sanding over both sides of the doors and the cabinet boxes. I cannot say enough about the time that we saved by spraying these doors. What took 4 days would have taken 2 weeks to complete if we had used a brush. We did have to use a brush on the boxes. Her kitchen is small and if we had chosen to spray, we would have had to tape off and cover all of the spaces we did not want to paint. It just wasn’t worth the time to paint such a small area. Also, a sprayer gave such a professional finish where using a brush would have left brush marks. I really admire those of you who can use a brush and get such a beautiful finish, but I am just not there yet.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Creating effects with Patina Paint - This dresser is a 1920’s Antique Widdicomb style. It was in beautiful shape for the most part. If you look closely, you will be able to see that the carving at the bottom is broken on one side. At the time, I didn’t really have the knowledge to fix this, so I cut off the other side so that it matched. You can’t even tell! It had a few places where it was missing a little of the veneer so I filled that in with some wood filler.</image:title>
      <image:caption>After cleaning, I primed all of it and sanded the top clean because my plan was to stain….talk about that later. *Learning point -Did you know that wood veneers date back to Ancient Egypt? Nearly 4,000 years ago, the earliest veneers were being applied to the tombs of the pharaohs to add decorative flair. (jacaranda.com) Just as in this piece, veneers were used to create interesting designs and patterns without using solid wood. This made the piece lighter in weight and preserved wood that might be hard to find.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - What is a Veneer? - Table Top after Sanding</image:title>
      <image:caption>Luckily, this table came completely apart which made it so much easier to sand and paint. If you look at the top of table above and compare it to the picture at the right, you can see that sanding cleaned it up considerably. It is now ready for staining. I chose to stain it a darker color - Dark Walnut - and I really like the contrast of the wood with the painted surface.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - What is a Veneer? - *Learning point -</image:title>
      <image:caption>This is the underneath of the large table top which is pictured above center. If you look closely, you can see that boards make up the thickness of the top of the table. The angled grain that you see above are thin slices of wood. Why is this important to know? First of all, knowing if the veneer is real wood is important because it will contribute to you deciding to paint or stain. Secondly, if you have a wood veneer such as this and you sand too aggressively, you will sand through the veneer to whatever surface is below. When purchasing pieces of furniture we often ask (or should) “Is it REAL wood?” The person selling it will often say yes because they are not knowledgeable. If possible, you should take a look at a piece before buying and if not possible, try to get as many pictures as you can.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - OOOHH!…..I Could Paint That! - Big improvement, right?</image:title>
      <image:caption>I had several cans with just a little paint left in them and I wanted to use all of it! The beautiful teal color you see is mostly Wise Owl Siren Song but it has many colors blended in as well. If you look closely, you will see a few splashes of WO Republic Red scattered around. *Learning point - This door project was a lesson in blending paints. I learned that a brush gives a different affect than a rag and a spray bottle is your friend when blending. I used a rag, which I found worked better on the rough texture of this door. However, I did put two coats of primer on before painting, which helped a little. I mentioned above that I took off the door handle and soaked it in vinegar and water overnight. I then took a wire brush and scrubbed it. You will notice that a lot of hardware is not solid brass. It is usually painted and that will come off when you scrub. If it is solid, you will know it. When you clean it with a brush, it will be beautiful! That doesn’t mean that you won’t change the look, but you won’t have to. In this case, I decided on a copper finish to highlight the red, coppery streaks in the door. If you zoom in, you will see them. After painting, I knew that I needed to have a strong top coat to protect it from moisture and sun. However, I did not want a glossy look. I ended up spraying it with a spray varnish with a satin finish. I’m not sure if it is strong enough, so I plan on resealing it often.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - OOOHH!…..I Could Paint That! - Experimenting with Patina Paints</image:title>
      <image:caption>You saw me use Dixie Belle’s Patina line of paints on the 1920’s Antique Dresser in another post. I actually did that first and then decided to try it on a set of iron candle holders that we already had. Now when using patina paints on iron, there is another step involved. Because the patina spray creates a chemical reaction with the metal in the paint, we have to protect our piece from that reaction if it is metal. Since these candle holders are metal, I had to first paint them with Dixie Belle’s Prime Start. This keeps the patina spray from reacting with the metal and breaking it down. Very important! After letting it dry, I then painted these candle holders using both the copper and iron patina paint. *Learning point - the Patina spray only reacts with the patina paint when it is wet. Therefore I used one coat and let it dry and then went back over it again but only in places where I wanted the reaction to take place. While it was wet I sprayed it with the green patina spray and watched it happen. The great thing about patina paints is that if you want more, you can do it again. Where you see the blue color is where I sprayed the Iron paint with the Green Patina spray. *Learning point - The Dixie Belle line of Patina paints has a green and a blue spray that you use on the Copper, Iron, or Bronze paint. Different combinations will give you different looks. I am posting a guide that I found on Pinterest to help you see the results of the different combinations. <image:title>About Me - My Story….</image:title>
      <image:caption>I grew up in a small town…..I mean really small! My graduating class had 25 students in it. However, I loved it! I knew everyone and everyone knew me. I was an athlete and in my spare time, I rode my horse wherever I could go. Now, I am a recently retired teacher. Actually, I retired from New Mexico 6 years ago but then decided to work in Texas, where I am retiring this year. I have spent the last 31 years in a classroom with high school students teaching mostly computer applications. I never knew it growing up but I actually have an artistic side. I’ve explored some of that throughout my adult life with photography and graphic arts. I guess you could say my love for growing flowers is also a creative outlet. However, I have recently discovered a love for refinishing furniture and I plan on letting that newfound artistry lead me wherever it wants. My obsession has always been my 2 beautiful daughters and you will probably hear me talk about them often. My family has grown to include my adorable 2-year old grandson and my 2 stepsons. My family is very important to me and as we travel this new journey, I hope you get to know them along with me. I hope this web site gives me an opportunity to make new friends where we can share and learn from each other. Sherral</image:caption>
